Ep.48 - Lucy and Saul answer a listener's question about plant nomenclature - we take a look at Genus, Species and Cultivar - and why plants are named like this....
As the Coronovirus pandemic has changed many aspects of life over the past many months, the gardens and green spaces all across the UK have continued in full glory over the spring - but Summer has arrived and for many the outdoors is the sanctuary from the continued uncertainty of what lies ahead. Head Gardeners Saul and Lucy have still been full at work at Stonelands and Easy Donyland (as well as their own gardens) and continue to share their lives as professional horticulturists, there tips and tricks and their observations of their gardening lives.
We regularly get questions on our Twitter feeds, and decided that one question from regular listener Tufty McTavish deserved a little in-depth discussion - namely why are plants named like they are? And how come the Latin of the Genus and Species is used, even though it seems quite hard for new gardeners to get their heads around. So we set out to answer that question and delve into the somewhat complicated but also relatively straightforward world of Botanical nomenclature.
